We spent the first week studying the 7 elements of art. The first one is line, so, we will focus on line during our first project. We have created lines by blowing black ink on paper. After it dries we surround the blown ink designs with detailed lines called "zentangles" (glorified doodling). When finished we will add watercolor to complete the project. Examples are below.

Art 8Half Portrait using MiraA Mira is my personal favorite tool to use in my art room. It is a red piece of plastic that reflects a drawn image from one side to the other. It's intended to be used in a math classroom to reflect line segments across the X or Y axis, but it works in any classroom! It is pure magic! The students love it, they have fun working with them, it builds their confidence in drawing and makes me a happy art teacher. * Mira-Red reflective piece of plastic
* The MacArthur M and a vertical axis to reflect over * The Mira is placed on the axis * You can not see the reflection from the right side * You can see the reflection from the left side.. reflection will "appear" to be on the right side of the axis * As you look through the left side of the Mira, draw the reflection with a pencil on the right side Using acronyms to remember important information is not a new technique, but one that works well for students at any age! Plus, they're fun to create. We needed to memorize the 7 elements of art for the upcoming semester test, so, we create an acronym phrase! They are mostly silly, but I wanted to share. The elements are: Line, Shape, Form, Color, Texture, Space, Value.
This year I am teaching a 7/8th grade year long art course, an 8th grade 9 week rotation, a semester Art I course for 9th grade and a full year Art I course for 9th grade! No matter which class you are in, I am SO glad that you are in ART this year! This year I will creating an after school Art Club. Space is limited, so I will only be taking 15 students. We will be working alongside ASU Art Education students after school 1 day a week. If you are interested in being in the Art Club please let me know! I will have more information when school begins. ART 7/8This class is made up of mostly 7th grade students and a few 8th grade students who have not taken art at MacArthur. We will be exploring the 7 Art Elements and creating art that relates specifically to them! One of my favorite projects to create with my 7/8th grade class are Celebrity Puppets! This is our first project and helps us get to know one another. You can find last years puppets in the Student Art Gallery! Like each course you will have the opportunity to enter several art shows throughout the year. It's always fun to see your work on display! The biggest show is the Annual JPS Art Show at Turtle Creek Mall. It takes place during the second semester of school, usually around February. ART 8 ROTATIONART I: SemesterThe 8th grade art rotation course is a 9 week class designed to expose each 8th grade student to art. We will be making 5-6 projects during our 9 weeks. Each project will reinforce one or two of the 7 art elements learned during the class. Don't worry! If you have taken art in the 7th grade, none of the projects will be the same! They are all new and fun! Check the Student Art Gallery for 8th grade art work from last year! I look forward to seeing you soon! Art I is a course designed to teach students to apply both the elements of art and the principles of art to the creative process. As an art I student you will learn to use a variety of media, techniques, processes, tools to compose original works of art! Students will learn to critique and reflect on their artwork and the artwork of others. Students will have an opportunity to participate in several art shows throughout the year and will learn to prep and hand their own art work. For examples of Art I Artwork, see the Student Art Gallery! ART IArt I is a course designed to teach students to apply both the elements of art and the principles of art to the creative process. As an art I student you will learn to use a variety of media, techniques, processes, tools to compose original works of art! The first semester of this course is very similar to the Art I semester course, however; we will go further in depth and create a variety of works that the semester course doesn't hold time for. Students will learn to critique and reflect on their artwork and the artwork of others. Students will have an opportunity to participate in several art shows throughout the year and will learn to prep and hand their own art work. For examples of Art I Artwork, see the Student Art Gallery!
